The Seychelles : Quite simply extraordinary…Cruising around the Seychelles islands is like nothing else in the world. From its landscapes to its beaches, the islands’ diversity is truly exceptional. The sunsets are of an almost spiritual nature, the beaches unspoilt and nature in general exceptionally well preserved. Temperatures in the Seychelles rarely exceed 28° both in and out of the water. As mentioned above, the Seychelles are one of the only places left on Earth that is still unspoilt and sheltered from mass industrialization. A number of sites are extremely well protected. Moreover, there are a number of stunning national parks. The Seychelles’ government is adamant about keeping its environment unpolluted. Thus you will be able to appreciate the same intact and unspoilt beautynavigators discovered in the 16th century.

Generally speaking, the Seychelles present smooth and ideal cruising conditions bareboat charters. Winds are easily predictable and range from 10 to 20 knots year round. There are two distinct seasons in the Seychelles. During the “dry” season (May to October), temperatures are moderate and winds generally blow from the South. The “rainy” season (November to April) brings on hot temperatures and some intense, but short tropical showers. Winds, during that period, generally blow from the NorthWest. The Seychelles are located right outside a “cyclone” belt. The tides are approximately 5 feet apart.

Situated between 4° and 5° south of the Equator, in the western part of the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles are approximately 1000 miles east of the Kenyan shores. The Seychelles are spread out on a territory of about 450 km2 and encompass 115 islands. The major islands are Mahé, Praslin, Silhouette and La Digue. Victoria is the capital of the Seychelles.

A truly unforgettable destination…You will discover the renowned granite blocs located right on the untouched beaches, giant turtles and unspoilt national parks. Moreover, you will fall in love with the impressive diversity of rare birds, fishes, trees and flowers. For diving enthusiasts, there are hundreds of magnificent diving spots, filled with all kinds of sublime coral reefs, and friendly colorful fish.

Vasco de Gama first discovered the Seychelles in 1502 and the islands became French property in 1756. At the end of the Napoleonian period, the Seychelles fell under British rule in 1814. On June 28th 1976, the Seychelles finally obtained their independence.

There are two major cruising areas in the Seychelles. The main area includes Mahé, Praslin, Silhouette, la Digue, Bird, Denis, among others. There is a great variety of anchoring spots and sailing distances between these spots don’t exceed 30 nautical miles. Located approximately 150 nautical miles from Praslin are the so called “outer islands” which include the Amirantes’ islands, Aldabra and Farquhar. These coral islands are only accessible with a professional skipper because the cruising grounds are tricky and often difficult to access. Cruising in this area is therefore subject to a legal authorization.

Praslin is the second largest island in the Seychelles (after Mahé). Whatever you choose to do, don’t miss out on the “Vallée deMai” with its unique sea of “coco” (aka the forbidden fruit, or the “coco fesse”). Praslin is the ideal starting point if you want to discover the Seychelles. St. Anne's vast bay, located on the island's eastern side, offers a large variety of safe and comfortable spots to anchor. 90% of the Seychelles’ population lives on Mahé. As logic would have it, this is where the international airport and the major harbor are located. Mahé’s shore is very scattered and there are a number of small bays with beautiful beaches. Some belong to hotels and resorts, others (especially the ones in the South) are still untouched and even more beautiful!
